چکیده

[1] Recent regulations require large-scale emission reductions of NOx and SO2 in the eastern United States. These emission changes will alter the partitioning of ammonia between the gas and particle phases. Furthermore, ammonia emissions are expected to increase in the future. How will these changes impact the contribution of ammonia to inorganic particulate matter and nitrogen deposition? We use a chemical transport model and emission scenarios representing years 2001, 2010, and 2020 to estimate the future change of the sensitivity of iPM2.5 to ammonia emission reductions and change in nitrogen deposition to ecosystems. We find that during winter conditions, particulate matter concentrations in several locations in the Midwestern US continue to have significant sensitivity to NH3 emissions. In addition, the total nitrogen deposition near NH3 emission sources increases 10–40%. Citation: Pinder, R. W., A. B. Gilliland, and R. L. Seasonal NH3 emission estimates for the eastern United States based on ammonium wet concentrations and an inverse modeling method

[1] Significant uncertainty exists in the magnitude and variability of ammonia (NH3) emissions. NH3 emissions are needed as input for air quality modeling of aerosols and deposition of nitrogen compounds. Approximately 85% of NH3 emissions are estimated to come from agricultural nonpoint sources, which are suspected to have a strong seasonal pattern. Because no seasonal information is available...

Ammonia emission controls as a cost-effective strategy for reducing atmospheric particulate matter in the Eastern United States.

Current regulation aimed at reducing inorganic atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is focused on reductions in sulfur dioxide (SO2) and oxides of nitrogen (NO(x) = NO + NO2); however, controls on these pollutants are likely to increase in cost and decrease in effectiveness in the future. A supplementary strategy is reduction in ammonia (NH3) emissions, yet an evaluation of controls on a...

Modeling atmospheric transport and fate of ammonia in North Carolina—Part II: Effect of ammonia emissions on fine particulate matter formation

Accurate estimates of ammonia (NH3) emissions are needed for reliable predictions of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) by air quality models (AQMs), but the current estimates contain large uncertainties in the temporal and spatial distributions of NH3 emissions. In this study, the US EPA Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system is applied to study the contributions of the agricultu...

Nitrous oxide and ammonia fluxes in a soybean field irrigated with swine effluent.

In the United States, swine (Sus scrofa) operations produce more than 14 Tg of manure each year. About 30% of this manure is stored in anaerobic lagoons before application to land. While land application of manure supplies nutrients for crop production, it may lead to gaseous emissions of ammonia (NH3) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Our objectives were to quantify gaseous fluxes of NH3 and N2O from e...

A special issue of JA&WMA on agricultural air quality: state of the science.

The world’s population has grown, from approximately 1.5 billion at the beginning of the 20th century to more than 6 billion today. This population increase has been accompanied by the rapid growth of intensive agriculture with its associated, significant impacts on the environment. Over the next 50 yr, the Earth’s human population is predicted to increase from the current level to more than 9 ...
